The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and prevention released their biennial update on prevalence rates for kids 8 years of age and across 11 monitoring sites in the United States.
-
There has been an approximate 15% increase since their last update in 2016 when it was estimated to be 1 in 68 kids to now 1 in 59 kids.
-
Experts suggest that this number may actually be higher, closer to 1 in 40 due to some limitations in population sampling.
-
In the state of New Jersey, their prevalence rate is at 1 in 34 kids by age 8.
-
Early diagnosis is critical in the development and learning of kids with Autism. The report cited that most kids were not diagnosed until the age of 4 even though Autism can be accurately diagnosed by age 2.
-
The new report found that new diagnostic criteria for autism adopted in 2013 (DSM-5) made only a slight difference in prevalence estimates. – Autism Speaks

Worked 15 years in California as ABA tutor for SELPA. Not surprised that the numbers are going up.
Also worked in Oregon for 5 months.
They are 25 years behind. Sad, but true.
Loved my work in school and home sessions. Students were in regular classrooms.
